It's that time of the year again. Time to say goodbye to the past 365 days and hello to a fresh start.
I'm not making any 'New Year's resolutions' this year. The entire concept seems silly to me. Lose weight, get fit, eat well, study harder, be a better person, love harder, be happy. Aren't these things that I should focus on EVERY day of the year instead of treating them like little crumbs of life that will be swept under the table and forgotten by January 31st?
2011 will be a profound year for me. I don't know the details of what is to come (do we ever?), but I know that it will be filled with many firsts. I hope to possess the strength and courage to follow my dreams and my heart, and the wisdom to make good decisions along the way.
I wish you all a year filled with health and happiness. See you in 2011!

Big. Or small?
BIG. This word describes so many things in my life. My student loans. My graduate textbooks. My butt. My feet. My credit card bill. My mouth. Even my teeth. Someone once told me that I had big teeth. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be a compliment or not. Sometimes I wish that my life would revolve more around the small things. A smile, a piece of good chocolate, laughter, hugs from the kids, a phone call from a friend...what is horrifying is that I am even considering these to BE the small things.
Tonight the family played a few rounds of UNO Attack. I remember playing card games with my parents and my grandparents when I was a child. I used to love it..my gosh, right now I can almost smell a fried spam sandwich with mustard on white bread - it was what we would always eat on Sunday nights when we would go to visit. You see, a small thing that left a BIG impact on me.
It is my only hope that my kids will hold the same great memories when they are grown. I'm not exactly doing things 'by the book' here - by living four hours away from kids' closest 'Grammie and Grampa' (the other grandparents live even farther away!). I grew up seeing my grandparents weekly, and mine are growing up seeing theirs, well, as much as possible..which sometimes doesn't feel like it's good enough. It's especially difficult during the holidays, when we (most usually due to my work schedule) tend to celebrate together 'around' the holiday rather than ON the holiday. I'm usually feeling like a discombobulated mess. Tired, cranky, and stressed out from buying and wrapping each and every gift, working, and finishing the current school term (for God's sake, I didn't even get a Christmas card out this year)..What scares me the most are my feelings of inadequacy when it comes to the development of any type of yearly family traditions.
My wish this Christmas is that the 'small' things will leave a BIG impact on my kiddos, and that perhaps I could find it within myself to see the greatness of the small things in my own life, too.

My First Time
Well, here I am. Blogging.
I'm not sure why it took me so long. Perhaps with 2011 just around the corner I thought it would be a fun addition to my daily routine. Or, more likely, another distraction...the fact that I'm on a short break from classes could have something to do with it, too..
2011. Wow. I remember in 1999 I thought it was going to be SO odd to have to get used to writing '2000' or '00'. What, exactly, happened to the last 11 years? Life I guess. Kids, jobs, moves...Anywho, 2011 promises to be a life-changing year for me. I will hopefully be blessed enough to catch my first baby this year. I've worked as a nurse in a Labor and Delivery setting for 10 years, but never had the pleasure of being the one to welcome a new life into this world with my own two hands. I pray that my hands, heart, and mind will possess all of the strength and knowledge needed to guide my patients safely through pregnancy and birth. I have worked so hard over the past two years - I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel!
